Omega 3 & 6 Oils
There has been
a lot of press recently about omega fish oils and the many health
benefits they can have. However, because they are oils, some of
which are unhealthy for us, there seems to be a little bit of confusion
within the general public whether or not to supplement with them.
Our pharmacists have written this article which we hope will explain
about the benefits of these omega oils.
The truth is,
there are HEALTHY oils/fats and UNHEALTHY oils/fats. There are two
healthy fats (or essential fatty acids) which our bodies need. These
are alpha-linolenic acid (omega 3) and linoleic acid (omega 6) which
are delicate and must be kept fresh in order to maintain their health
promoting and health maintaining properties.
These essential fatty acids increase energy production and stamina
and therefore useful for athletes, elderly people or those with
low energy levels. The energy provided is not a buzz like you get
with caffeine products but a stable, sustained extended energy.
These omega oils help with weight loss and enhance fat burning.
They also play a role maintaining cell membranes, curbing food cravings,
producing prostaglandins and other feel good hormones. These fats/oils
actually help keep us slim.
Omega oils
are essential for both brain development and brain function. 60%
of our brains’ weight is fat so it is not surprising that
supplementing with these fats helps keep it in a healthy state.
Studies have shown omega 3 & 6 oils help with learning problems
such as dyslexia, hyperactivity, ADHD, alertness or other mental
conditions.
Omega 3 & 6 oils help to lower cholesterol and triglycerides
in the blood. They are used in the production of prostaglandins
which make platelets less sticky, reducing risk of clots that cause
heart attacks and strokes. They also help our kidneys remove excess
water, improving blood pressure and reducing inflammation.
Omega 3 oils
have antioxidant properties, protecting our cells from damage and
promoting removal of toxins. This enhances our IMMUME SYSTEM.
Skin, hair
and nails are improved by omega fatty acids because they form a
barrier against loss of moisture (dehydration) which is the basis
of ageing and dry skin conditions. Supplementation with these oils
will help people get relief from eczema, acne, psoriasis as well
as improving growth of hair and nails. People also tan better and
burn less.
Omega fatty acids improve our digestive systems, preventing inflammation;
leaky gut syndrome, food allergies and they lower the glycaemic
index of foods.
Omega oils
play an important role in women’s health. They are SAFE during
pregnancy and supplementation should be actively encouraged. During
pregnancy the developing baby take these essential fatty acids from
their mother for their brain and organ development. The mother’s
depletion of these essential oils can result in dry skin or even
post natal depression. Therefore supplementation may help prevent
or improve these conditions.
Natural
Dietary Sources of Essential Omega Oils
Most people
do not have a reliable source of omega 3 oil in their diet. Cold
water fish are one well known source but the majority of people
do not eat enough. Vegetarians are worse off. Another very rich
source of omega 3 (not omega 6) is flax seed oil .The seeds also
improve diets by increasing dietary fibre.
To summarise,
essential omega 3 & 6 oil deficiency affects cells and tissues
throughout the entire body. Supplementation reverses these deficiency
syndromes and therefore our pharmacists recommend supplementation.

oils. We have short listed a few to stock and feature them below.
